6–8 months
Offer half a ripe banana, peeled. It is soft and easy to grip; if it is slippery, roll it in finely ground oats.
Mash a ripe banana smoothly with a fork. Thin it with a little breast milk or formula if needed, or stir it into porridge.
9–12 months
Cut into soft bite-sized pieces of about 1 cm so your baby can practise picking them up between thumb and finger.
Leave the mash lumpier, or stir it into porridge or full-fat plain yoghurt.
12+ months
Offer slices or bite-sized pieces, and let your toddler practise with a fork. Peeling a whole banana themselves comes later.
Spread on toast, stir into oats, or bake into muffins without added sugar.
